CROSS COUNTRY SEASON WRAP UP
Eight Gateway students participated in cross country during the 2008 season. All runners made outstanding improvements in strength, speed, and endurance. At the district finals on November 1 in Jackson, MO, three Gateway runners, Chad Kozarits, Elaine Gill, and Audrey Fiudo, qualified to run in the State Championship meet and also were named to the All-District team. At the State Championship meet, all Gateway runners finished in the top third of all state finalists.
The team is graduating three seniors, state finalist Chad Kozarits, team captain Bill Avery, and Ben Kelly, who this year became the first person in Gateway history to run cross country during all four years of high school. A strong group of underclassmen, led by state finalists Elaine Gill and Audrey Fiudo, will return in 2009 for what is shaping up to be another fine year for Gateway cross country.

FALL VARSTIY BOYS SOCCER SEASON WRAP-UP
The varsity Titan’s soccer team finished their fall season with a 4-1 loss in the semi-final round of the district playoffs against John Burroughs, who entered the contest ranked #1 in the state. The Titans ended a very balanced campaign with a respectable 13-13 record. The 2008 season was met with many tough challenges, including playing 6 games against teams that were state ranked in the top 10 and also losing 6 games that were decided by only one goal. On the upside, the boys were ranked themselves in the top 15, consolation finalist in the prestigious CYC tournament (2nd year in a row), and district semi-finalist (4th year running). Key wins included a 2-1 penalty kick victory over Mascoutah in the 2nd round of the CYC tournament and 3-0 road victory over tenth-ranked Sacred Heart-Sedalia. The Titans were led by senior captains Jerry Forget, Jeremy Berfanger, and scoring leader John Myers (21 goals). Other key senior contributors were midfielders Alex Lanari and Peter Callahan, who scored 23 goals between the two. Three freshmen also made huge strides in their first year sporting the Titans blue and gold. Jeremy Weissler started all 26 games in goal and recorded 6 shutouts. Tom Cox was 4th overall on the team in total points with 23 and James Pieper led the Titans in assists with 11 tallies. Congrats to all the soccer Titans who worked hard and made the Gateway school and community very proud!
Girls Volleyball - 2007 District Champs!!!

FALL VOLLEYBALL SEASON WRAP-UP
The Lady Titan’s had quite a year on the volleyball court. With a season record of 24-7, the best in the school’s volleyball program history, the team ended just a few wins short of their pre-season goal. “This year, every single contest was one step toward our goal of bringing home another district championship. We came short of that goal, but we cannot take away the many successes of the season. We went three for three in tournament wins bringing home three 1st place trophies.” says Coach Anderson. While they feel short of achieiving their ultimate goal both the JV and Varsity teams had amazing seasons. For several weeks this year, Gateway Academy was ranked by the Post Dispatch as one of the Top 10 Small school volleyball programs in St. Louis. Quite an accomplishment for such a young school in MSHSAA. “With only five years in MSHSAA, it is amazing that we have been able to leave such a mark in such a short period. Schools that have been around from much longer have never seen the top ten rankings and we were able to make that list within five seasons. People know that they will have to play well to compete with our girls on the court.” comments Coach Anderson. Off the court, the team was busy working on their apostolic project. This year they held fund-drives for St. Louis Crisis Nursery which helps children in possible abuse situations find relief. They were able to raise thousands of dollars in merchandise and cash to help the Nursery fill it’s shelves with supplies. Not many teams make their mark not only on the courts, but off the court as well. Way to go Ladies!
