Inspired with zeal to offer young people the finest Integral Formation possible, a group of five lay people met to discuss the idea of starting a school under the direction of the religious order, the Legionaries of Christ. After several meetings Gateway Academy opened its doors to 56 students in grades kindergarten through 8th in 1991. By 1994 the school had grown to 80 students from Kindergarten through the 10th grade. The future looked bright as 30 acres of land had been purchased in suburban Chesterfield for the development of the permanent school.
In January of 1996 construction had begun on the permanent Gateway Academy in Chesterfield. The phase I building of 20 classrooms, a multipurpose room, library, science lab, computer lab, music room and chapel, opened in the fall of 1996. The “new school”, now PK3-12th opened with 170 students in 1996. In 1999 new construction had begun on Phase II (a new gymnasium, locker rooms, stage, cafeteria, 3 additional classrooms and some new offices. By the fall of 1999 and now with 335 students, Gateway Academy was developing rapidly.By September of 2003 Phase III, an additional 30,000 square feet was opened. The school now was able to offer separate Boys and Girls buildings.
We now have over 445 students, graduating seniors to various fine universities since 1997. We offer a complete academic program with numerous athletics, fine arts and spiritual programs for the formation of the whole person. The future still looks quite bright as we look forward to continued growth and involvement by all those associated with Gateway Academy.
